My near-death experience

March 12, 2015
Sooooooooo..who wants to hear about my snowboarding trip? Or should I say falls? ;)
Let me tell you know - I wasn't great. In fact.. I fell a lot. But, I had fun because of the friends I was with! I made many memories, and I may just try it again next year. So, onto my funny stories!
This is going up the bigger hill (I started out on the kiddie hill..I actually made it down that hill fine the first time! I don't know what happened afterwards). Anyway, on my way up the larger slope I was freaking out. I had been told by many friends that getting off the lift was one of the hardest things to do. I braced myself and got off fine the first time! Score! Let's just say my confidence was up pretty high.. at least until I went down the slope...

I told my friends in the snowboarding group "do NOT leave me!". I was pretty scared of breaking something and being alone.. They told me not to worry "it will be fine!". So, I started down.. I did pretty well, until I came to a "fork in the hill". There were 3 choices - I didn't know where to go! So, I went on the easiest looking one (turns out that was the hardest..oh great, Julia!). Before I knew it, I was going extremely fast! I didn't know how to slow down very well...

Boom!

I wiped out. reallllly badly. I could taste the blood in my mouth and everything. I quickly took my glove off and felt my face for any blood..thankfully I only slightly bit my tongue. I was so shaken up that I took off my snowboard and admitted defeat. I was done. I did what I was so scared of doing on my first run! I walked back to the ski lodge where I knew some of my friends were hanging out. (Oh, and by this time my snowboarding group was freaking out because I disappeared...apparently I went down the wrong slope?! No kidding! ;) )

By the time I got back to the lodge ( I realllly went the wrong way!) it was lunch time. My group found me and gave me a good scolding (haha!) for leaving them after I told them not to leave me! I told my friends about my wipeout and how I didn't think I could do it anymore. (after-all, staying in a ski lodge isn't that horrible, is it?!)
This is how my poor friends found me. See? Very shaken up! (start the sad music ;) ) Let's just say, I have smart friends. They let me warm up and calm down a bit before they encouraged me to go back out. I finally gave in because someone else in our group told me that he would teach me how to snowboard. I guess I needed a new teacher? ;) I went out there a bit scared...I'll admit it! But, I wasn't going to give in. I had a moment of defeat...I wasn't going to go home saying I spent the whole day in the lodge..no!

I was going to snowboard.

So after more learning and fixing my snowboard strap (I guess -12 is too cold for plastic?!) we were back on the ski lift. Yes, I made it off the lift once again with no problems. Yay! In the picture above I am getting my courage up before going down the slope for my second time...thanks Bree for getting that shot! ;) Can you tell that I am saying "you can do this..you can do this!" to myself?

Well..I think I wiped out 10 or so times going down that second time. I would get very scared once I started going fast...I actually never did figure out how to slow down! haha! I was very thankful for my patient snowboarding group...they wouldn't give up on me, so I wouldn't either. I had a few people (including my sister who was skiing) try to get me to switch to skis...but nothing doing. I am a stubborn person when I set my mind on something.
After a while (and I was doing better by now!) my group said we should go to biggest hill. I was told the view was amazing - I just had to see it! I was a little scared about going down the slope, but I figured I could work my way down slowly. Guys, seriously, it was so beautiful up there! But, it was also 10 degrees colder up there...and being that the temp was already 10 below, it was really cold. We all strapped on our snowboards and started down....................

I made it ..okay, I'm not even going to tell you how far..it is too embarrassing - anyway, I made it not too far from where I started and I wiped out really bad. I heard my neck crack! NECK CRACK! :O I was told later by my group that it looked like a really bad wipe out - my worse out of all. Believe me..it hurt. I once again took my board off and walked down the rest of that part of the slope to where my group was waiting. I did put it back on though! I actually finished the the run!
So, as you can see, snowboarding and I didn't mix very well. But, being the Julia that I am, I can turn my painful day into a funny tale. I like telling stories, can you tell? ;)

I got up at 6 a.m and got home around 8 p.m. I was so exhausted that I was falling asleep on the couch! :D And, if you've ever been snowboarding, you know how you feel the day after. I think the worst part for me was my neck. I couldn't move it for days! And if someone asked me to go snowboarding again on that day I would have said no. In fact, I did tell my sister that I don't think I could do it again...but looking at these pictures and remembering the memories I made, I've changed my mind. I'll go again.

You hear that hill? I will beat you!

Have you ever been snowboarding? If so, tell me a funny story from your adventure! How did you like the ski lift? And, would you go snowboarding if someone asked you after reading this post?

  1. I've never been snowboarding (which is shameful, considering I live in one of the most snowiest states) butI would love to try. Snowboarding or any other sport involving snow and going down hill can be dangerous-- my friend's ski coach is suffering a brain injury. :/ I'm praying she'll be all right!

    xoxo Morning

    1. Really? You should try it! You'll have to tell me all about it though. :) Yeah, speeding down a hill on a board can be rather dangerous..but fun! ;) Oh my! I will be praying as well...that is horrible.. :(

    2. Yes, it was! I don't know how I would have done but it looks fun! I'm not one to do much cold actives. ( Well I 've never really tried them! ) I do like ice skating though and I get to do that this weekend. :) Hopefully I don't make a fool out of myself!

  5. Wow sounds fun. I have only ever seen snot once though so I have no idea what it would be like.... or even what it is like for it to be that cold.

  7. Wow, Julia, you are brave! I've only skied once in my life and it was a pretty fun experience. Admittedly, my first day of skiing was a LOT of falling down over and over again. Trying to get off the lifts successfully...yeah...pretty embarrassing. I eventually got the hang of it, but I was certainly not brave enough to try snowboarding!

I'm glad you survived. Do you think you'll ever go skiing again?

    1. I asked my friends how they did on their first day and they all said that they fell a lot too! I mean, snowboarding and skiing are very hard! I don't know, I might! Our friends invited us to go again next year, and if all goes well, I'd love to! :)

  8. I haven't been snowboarding (I can hardly walk on two feet let alone slide on one) but as you know I've been skiing before. I was scared to death of the ski lift--I was certain I was going to fall off of it or I wouldn't get off soon enough. I made it though! :) I think I actually would try going snowboarding. When it comes to sports, I'm a daredevil and will try pretty much anything.

    1. Good job, Amanda!! :D I didn't think the ski lift was hard either. Yeah, you are pretty good at doing things like that! I am scared of the soccer ball..but you can handle it, so I think you'd do fine. ;) I actually hurt my knee from snowboarding.. :P

  11. Ah, yes, shall we continue our conversation about boarding :P I don't know if I have really any funny stories about it, but I can say that you were wayyyy more persevering than me :) After I wiped out a couple times I like literally gave up...No kidding. Those hills look great! I didn't even give a chance to try one of the bigger slopes, they freaked me out way to much. But I went on the bunny slope (LIKE SERIOUSLY. How do you get BUNNY out of a freaky slope??) and that's when I crashed and literally snowboarded underneath a pine tree. then the instructor came over and was like, "Just unstrap and go to your friends. That's good enough." And I'm like, "Yeah, I agree." But really :) It was a crazy experience. Though getting off the lift was a bit scary, I will say. Thankfully I didn't fall getting off the lift. My friend hurt her rotary cuff though, and she's not going to be able to play volleyball or anything for another 6-8 weeks soooo :( But anyways, this comment is probably getting way too long! Happy weekEND!

    1. Ah, yes, we shall dear. ;) I know..I am like that. Everyone told me that they were shocked that I kept on getting up. Actually..someone told me that I was an encouragement to them! Gosh, me? The one who wiped out probably 100X's?! Oookay. ;) I decided not to use the instructor as friends told me it was pointless. I'm actually kinda glad I didn't miss out on something. :D Oh boy, that sounds painful! I hurt my knee and am still dealing with it. Thankfully, it isn't too bad. Haha, I love your looong comments! It seems like we haven't spoken in forever.. I guess I just have been busy. :P You should get on googlehangouts again! :D Yes, happy weekEND..but tomorrow is Monday. :P Oh well, I am going to go frost my lemon blueberry cake..tada! ;)

    2. Haha, I'm sure you were an encouragement! Yeah, I guess in some things I'm a little more persevering than snowboarding...whoops :) yeah, the instructor wasn't that helpful....Ooh, I hope you feel better soon. Almost seems like all my friends who went boarding hurt themselves....uh oh. I want to go again next winter, but I'm thinking I may want to try skiing. I dunno. The skiers were really flying down the slopes. Yes! I love your long comments too, they're so fun to read :) Yeah, we should.... I need to go now, but maybe sometime later :) ugh...I have to get up early tommorow ;(

    3. Aww..you are so sweet! And, I know what you mean. I sometimes will look at something and tell myself that it would be pointless to try and accomplish it. But, then there are others that I stare in the face and make them shake. ;) Thanks! I don't know, I might try skiing next year as well..not sure. :) I know! My sister was doing the same thing! :P Heehe, I think we are both pretty funny. :D Oh yeah, lovely school eh? I actually just finished for the day..how is it going for you? I'll try and get on googlehangouts this weekend and maybe we can chat? I don't know if I'll be home Saturday, but maybe Sunday. :) Talk with you later!

    3. It is fun having an older brother who's adventurous. :) Well, we hangout with him and his family every weekend, and when it gets warmer we'll end up going rock climbing again! Oh, and he once took us on a hike to a waterfall that we jumped off of! :D It was so fun and I want to do something like that again soon!

Oh no! Is your sister all right? And it's totally fine - I understand! :)

    5. It is fun (plus you get to spend some time out in nature), but it's also a bit nerve-racking when you do higher climbs! It's also tough! I know!!! That hike was so awesome! It was super muddy and shady and it took a long time, but I loved it nonetheless! :) I even slipped and fell in the mud! :P XD Hahaha... Yeah.

Oh gosh, that sounds terrible! I'm glad she's doing better.

    6. Oh my! It sounds like a lot of fun though. :) Thanks, she is doing great now. The doctors said that it was because of low sodium levels and that it shouldn't happen again. Phew! :)

  14. I'm sorry that you had a not so great experience the first time. The only time I've been snowboarding was when I tried out my husband's snowboard on a tiny hill in a park a couple of months ago. He is more of a skier, he skied every winter as a kid and when he saw that I enjoyed the snowboard he decided it was time to start skiing again. We went for the first time earlier this month. I wiped out toward the end of my first night and the slopes were basically ice by then so i slid down about 6 feet of the slope head first! We've gone 4 times so far this year and last time I skied the black diamond slope very slowly 4 times and only fell twice!

    1. Hi Jill! Aww, thanks, it wasn't too bad, but it was a bit scary. ;) That sounds like a lot of fun! I have only gone that one time, but I might be going again next year. Do you think you will be skiing again next year? :) Thanks so much for the follow!

    2. I'm definitely looking forward to skiing next year especially when it's earlier in the winter and the snow doesn't melt so quickly and turn into ice at night!! I fell right behind someone on one of the trips and when we looked at each other I said "I do not like ice." to which he replied, "Yeah, gravity is not my friend either."

You are welcome! Glad to follow! :)
