DO WE UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF THE WRITTEN WORD??? -- that includes novels and YA // i got fishes

May 24, 2017
annnnnnnndd yes if you look closely you can see my calendar still says "april" just showing you all real life here

I don't normally get time to read in the day..especially during the school year. So, I end up staying REALLLY REALLLY late reading...and that can have side effects cuz crazy dreams. But, today, I actually had a lot of spare time and read. and read. and read. It's just the natural thing for me to do...and then when I was in the kitchen, I was thinking about the book.

and you see, that's the point. I WAS THINKING ABOUT THE BOOK. the point it was trying impress, the way it was written, the errors of thought, if I agreed or not...etc

a book is a powerful thing kids. Don't ever underestimate the responsibility you have while reading - like okay, YA these days. ohhhhh my word. I have steered clear from YA for years now, and then a few weeks ago I saw this book about some avalanche and I was like "oh cool, this sounds interesting."

5 pages later. BAM. swearing.

and I'm just thinking this has got to stop *inserts emperors new groove quote here*
I don't think I can go into this without majorly ranting....it's wrong. that pretty much sums it all up. But, that book, after a much needed slam shut, got me thinking.

HOW CAN I CHANGE THAT???

I'm often asked "are you going to try to publish your novels??"
and I'm always like "ha. that's way too hard."

But then I see the dirt that's laying around and I'm like "hhheeeeyy. who cares if it's hard, maybe I should try."

Because what's accepted and has become normal, doesn't have to be accepted and become normal.

We have a say. We have the power. We are the young adults. We are the people being changed by what we read. So, what if we actually tried to do something about the content being published? Do you realize the power of the written word?

Newspapers were started because the words could be read and the news would then be passed around. Also, those words which are printed have strength - they last. Why else have books been burned? Why else are people afraid of them?
We may not all be writers - in fact a lot of us are readers. (which is a majorly important thing for us writers haha) sometimes I just want to ditch the thought of novels and stick to poetry and short stories - cuz they're easy. *thinks of my own poem and cringes*

And, of course, I'm not going to leave the Bible out. If God chose to have His words written down, we should all take that into consideration. duh.

My brother is reading over my shoulder and just asked me a question;
"who are you talking to?"
I shrugged and said "Who do you think I'm talking to?"
"the whole world?"

And, maybe that's a bit of a jump. But, hey, why not? We've all got voices - we all have a choice.

ooooooohhh and also LOOK I GOT TWO LITTLE MINI GOLD FISHES - they are apparently called "gold dust" which is actually really cute. and their names? Gil and Fin. (at first they were Lewis and Clark which I still really like.....but then Gil and Fin are such fishy names ya know)

WHAT WOULD YOU NAME YOUR LITTLE GOLD DUST FISH???
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TRYING TO CHANGE YA??

  1. You are sooooo RIGHTTT and that is one of the main reasons I write. (Pun intended for sure) I definitely read and read and read, but I write a lot too, and I can so relate to your views on YA books these days. We need to be the changers, the shakers, the people considered weird because they don't write hectic sex scenes or use swearwords and God's name in vain as often as commas the way others do.

We need to be thinking on pure and good things and therefore writing pure and good things.

Also, your fish names are adorable. Brilliant post as always, Ju.

  3. I want to change the world. (duh, LOL!) I want to take everything bad, and stuff it in the washer, and then have it come out soaking wet yet redeemed. And who am I to do that? Yeah, seriously. It's the Holy Spirits's job but that does not mean I can absolutely HELP. I can portray Christianity as what is really is, and not some binding religion, through the things I say and the actions that I do. :D

Fish?? Eeeeeee! I love fish. *smiles* Probably Gilbert and Kiwi.
(Are those not only the two most clashing-together *cringes at terrible expression* but also the most FABULOUS names?!)

As for fishie names, I'd say Aeregon or Peter. Lol

  7. Amen to all that! My post for the 3rd is actually going to be about how powerful stories are xD But yeah. YA is a tough thing. I usually only read the Christian stuff these days because of how horrible the other stuff is. And that thing with your brother saying you're talking to the whole world...that's awesome. The stuff little kids say can be so deep xD

    2. So, first, are you looking for speculative YA or contemporary? The ones I know are all speculative -- Dragons in Our Midst (Bryan Davis...basically all of his), Out of Time series (Nadine Brandes), Ilyon Chronicles (Jaye L. Knight), Blades of Acktar (Tricia Mingerink), and almost all of Enclave Publishing has great stuff.

  8. I so completely agree. I want to get good stuff out there. That's one of the reasons I write in general - I write the stuff that me a year ago would have wanted to read. That the me now wants to read. That the future me will want to read. I write for the kids like me who don't want to read the garbage lying around everywhere.

And your fish are so great!

  10. That was one of the reasons I thought I might like to make movies. ;P but now I know that's a crazy dream, that I don't really care if it comes true or not. I just want to get married and be a wife and mother. Maybe you think that's old fashioned, but that's me XP *laughs*
But I agree with everything you said in this post and I LOVED IT!!! go change the world! *high five*
Hmm.... What WOULD I name my fish!? I wonder?? I'll have to think about that LOL. XD

    2. I've always loved the idea of making a movie! When I dream, I dream in different angles and lighting, and I love watching movies that are well made!! The Man from Snowy River!! I love all the angles and the way it was cut, and the music and the lighting *dies*
Really? You don't think I'm old fashioned? I read blogs, and everybody has this "dream job" they want to do and they're all working towards it and I'm like, "I just want a husband".
Tom and Huck. I think I would name my fish Tom and Huck. XP

    3. woooah! If I were you, I still wouldn't give up that dream completely!
not at all!! I've never really had a "dream job" either. And besides, being a wife and mother is a full time job - so it is like your dream job!!
      haha!! that's the best <3

  11. WOW YES TO EVERYTHING IN THIS POST (including the fishes...lol once upon a time I had a betta fish and he thought he was king or something xD)

YA is a genre I've always steered clear from after reading even a little bit of it. I mean, okay, I've never read any of the big name YA books, but like, once I saw a book at my library that looked really good and I was like YES I'LL GIVE IT A SHOT. Ha. Ha. Ha. I did finish it, but I was literally SO disgusted by the end. WHYYYYY? This post is so inspiring, girl. Like, I've always thought of myself as a writer, but sometimes (LIKE NOW XD) I don't feel very inspired to write AT ALL. But you're right -- if nobody steps up to it, who's gonna change the world? The people that already are? NAY NAY NOT TODAY.

I think it also helps that I like more "creative" things anyway (like writing, photography, film making)...but then the more and MOST important thing is to make sure it's different from the filth the world offers. Because one can't change the world by trying to be like it :D

GREAT POST, JULES. (as always =)
