WHY IN THE WORLD AREN'T BOOKS RATED LIKE MOVIES ARE?????!!! // encouragement + neat t-shirts [day 6 of nano]

July 5, 2017
countless times have I picked up a book and put it back down bc I don't really know the content in said book -- like UUHHGGG. Okay, with DVDs you pick it up, flip around the back and read. You get a little bit about the movie, who made it, the actors, and then waaaaaaayyy down in the bottom it'll say "PG" or "PG-13" or "R" and then under those letters it'll be like "for language and brief violence."

WHY OH WHY DOES HOLLYWOOD HAVE THIS BUT THE SIMPLE BOOK PUBLISHERS DONT??

like I get it. People have different standards. Everyone has that line that they don't cross -- of course the line is at various spots for each individual. but if movies can do it why can't books be rated??

I'd love to be able to flip around a book to see "PG for so and so". You get a better picture of whats in the book. It's almost as if publishers DONT want this. Because admit it, reading a book is waaaaaayyy different than watching a movie. yes, actors can do a really good job -- sometimes even the music/film work can make a film JUST SO AMAZING.

yet. yet. yet.

What would you say is valued and cherished? Books. Yes. They have lasted for so long and now what's happening to them? They're becoming dirtier and dirtier (not saying there haven't always been junky books cuz hahaaa yeah they've always been there) and books are slipping farther away.

sooooooooooooo maybe we need to change the way we do book reviews. Often, I see a review and think OH this book is neat! But, rarely do I hear the reviewer point out the negative side (unless its about some cheesy part) and I'm like uuhhg. Because, I would REALLY like to know -- I'd like to save myself from having to slam the book shut and walking away mad and disgusted for days.

WE ARE THE REBELLION.

we can change this. we can make a movement. I'm really excited for the day when we will walk into the library and see our friends published books on the shelves. We will be like Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. We will, guys. Don't give up. don't give in.

F I G H T .

just know this. The faster you give in, the quicker you lower your standards, the less likely you'll have to make an impact. to change the world.

let's stop raving about a book just bc it's being raved about. Lets stop forgetting about the Lord's name being taken in vain on page 27, just bc of the really good characters + story plot in the end. Lets stop bending and start standing strong.

Come on, my friends. We've got this.

btw LOOK AT THE SHIRTS MY FRIEND AMANDA MADE FOR ME FOR MY GRADUATION PRESENT AHHHH

ARE YOU WILLING TO FIGHT AND STAY STRONG??
WHAT WOULD YOU WANT YOUR CUSTOM T SHIRT TO SAY?

^^ THIS kinda gave me chills tbh. like-- YES! What a cool vision. We are the next generation of writers, which is so exciting but it also comes with a responsibility. Srsly, why DON'T people rate books like movies?-- would be SO helpful. Sometimes I can find Goodreads reviews that talk about the content before I open the book!

  4. THOSE SHIRTS ARE SO COOL! I want one with my blog name on it. XD
There's this really neat site called Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/) that reviews books and movies. I've found it to be very helpful when trying to figure out if a book is okay. I looked EVERYWHERE for a review of The Book Thief and I finally found a good one on there! You should check it out sometime. :D

  5. Wow, wow, wow! I sooo needed this right now. I've seen people ranting and raving about all these popular books, and I've kind of gotten to the point where I feel like I'm missing out. But, not necessarily. I don't need to have the most popular new book, because, odds are, it probably wouldn't be as enjoyable to me as much as it's hyped up to be. And I agree with you totally. Books should be rated like movies. Can we make this a thing, please. Also, I really appreciate your stand. It's rare and appreciated, so thank you. You inspire me.

Also, the shirts look great, you're an amazing model, and I love them both, but especially the first one. <3

  6. This post was so impactful, you did a really fabulous job! It's totally true, every word, and every time you do a post I'm amazed at how you recognize it.
I am willing to fight and stay strong, but I don't think that should mean only reading books that are perfectly clean because you're never going to find one of those, even our books once they're published (God willing) -- they will fall low in someone's standards -- someone out there will put it down. But that doesn't mean we have to take it to heart. We can fight against it, but that means accepting it and knowing that we can't change it all in one place, all at one time, all by ourselves.
I would really like a T-shirt that says (I actually have a folder labeled 'If I Could Design A Shirt'...) 'We're all mad here' or 'Lord, what fools these mortals be', or 'Me? I'm as innocent as that dragon over there.' LOLOL

    Brilliant post, absolutely brilliant,

    1. oh wow gosh <3 And yes, I agree. I think it is really hard as well, but I guess like I said, everyone has that line. I think its good that everyone knows that and accepts it, like you said! <3
hahahaha good ones, Amelia. Good ones XD

  7. THIS. IS. SO. COOL. Basically insert everything I said on Facebook here, but it's actually SO SUPER COOL GONNA DIE to see someone actually wearing something I designed. ;) Shoutout to Rachel for figuring out how to use the machine!! She's da bomb.
Also. UM I'VE WONDERED THIS SO MANY TIMES BUT I'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PUT THIS INTO WORDS. I recently read Everything Everything (review up on my personal blog) and at first it was so cute but then it got PG-13 reeeeaaaaal fast. I was so sad. And like you said, it's different with books than movies. Once I've started a book, it's EX. TRE. MELY. HARD. for me to stop reading it. I get so emotionally involved, and there's nothing more satisfying than closing a book. <3
And what book are you working on for NaNo? Just realized I never asked and you never said!!

  9. YESSSSS we really need to stop this! SOO MUCH TRUTH! Good books need to be published, because the books we give the next generation are going to influence them greatly. And when we give them stuff like "The Diary of A Wimpy Kid" thats what we are gonna get. Wimpy kids. Nice post! Lets do this rebellion!!
I LOVE YOUR SHIRTS SOOO MUCH! <3<3<3

  10. lol EXACTLY WHAT CLARA SAID UP THERE. We're gonna get wimpy kids when they read the books out there like Diary of A Wimpy Kid XD SO TRUE THOUGH LIKE WOW

And I agree with this whole post like wow you are so motivational, y'know? I know sometimes it's kind of like because a book is SOO popular everyone feels like they HAVE to go along with flow and just support it, but THAT IS SO NOT TRUE. YOU'LL NEVER CHANGE THE WORLD BY TRYING TO BE LIKE IT. (Sorry that had to be in all caps :)) haha, but THIS IS A GREAT POST DUDE.

  15. Hm, I'd want a t-shirt that said "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (which I'm sure there's plenty that say this already) or "Priceless". I think there's probably a bunch of other things I'd like too. ;)

  17. YESSSS!!! So much agreement for rating books like they do movies! This is one reason Christian fiction is my go-to so I can avoid heavy content. However, I do love secular works too and I agree that they should be rated because even with children fiction you can't be safe.

  19. Those shirts are adorable!!

And YES I'm all for rating books like they do movies. (I really like Lindsey (booksforchristiangirls.blogspot.com) because she pulls out all the negative content for consideration. Also, pluggedin has pretty good book ratings that I trust.)
