CAN WE HAVE DECENT EMOTION FILLED CONVERSATIONS THRU TEXTING ???? // emotion + how do you write it

September 5, 2017

I have had (and am having) a lot of online friendships. They mean the world to me -- I absolutely love the vast amount of things I learn from people all over the world! Such as, Jane from Australia (still think it's odd that you live in the future and eat lunch when I'm going to bed....), or Tammy from South Africa (WHEN CAN I COME VISIT!?), Jon from Fiji (still in shock over how Thursday is before Sunday...), and then all my friends in the states! *has gigantic mental list* like ITS OVERWHELMINGLY AWESOME. And, the best thing is, we are all friends with each other, have inside jokes, common likes, and most importantly, all have passion and love in Christ.

ITS BEAUTIFUL but we can only talk through one way -- online. with written words. Like, okay, the ability to express feelings through typing on a keyboard is fantastically amazing. but is the conversation with your friend the same emotionally as it would be if you were in person? idk.

TEXTING IS SO SCARY CUZ YOU COULD BE LIKE;

"oh man. ikr."

and the person who gets that text is like "WAIT WHAT DOES SHE MEAN BY THAT!?!??!?!"

and have a panic attack. let's face it, we are all waiting for the sarcastic font.

But, can we have some deep conversations through texting (or emails, comments, blogposts even!) YES GOSH WE CAN!!!!! also, we can have a lot of goofy ones, which have made MANY inside jokes *grins at nanowrimo gang of 2016*

W A Y S  T O  S H O W  E M O T I O N  I N  W R I T T E N  T E X T

  • USE ALL THE CAPITALS ADMIT IT IT SHOWS EMOTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • also those exclamation marks. hehee
  • you know when use crazy bloggers say *gives everyone pizza* or *sobbing* well, its cuz THAT IS GIVING YOU A MENTAL PICTURE     *gives away deep blogger secret* see. yup. and, do I talk like that in real life? nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. *shakes head* totally nope. (NEED THAT SARCASTIC FONT NOW HERE)
  • gifs. I didn't use those things for a L O N G  time but now I'm like how did I live before???
  • silence. sadly, that is one of those ones where people freak and are like "I SAID SOMETHING WRONG." bc it took 2 hours to respond but really, I WAS LIKE DRIVING OR BREATHING OR WHATEVER LOL sooorrryyyyy

and, ya know what I've learned, writing a blogpost or chatting with friends online is actually pretty easy. Sure, I have had mess ups, but heyyyy, that's a friendship learning curve. in fact, the area I struggle with more, is WHAT EVEN IS EMOTION?!?!?!?!??!?! cuz when someone says "OH. You're emotional." it generally means you're crying?????? or is this just in my life? cuz...like emotions are so deep and almost ouch to touch.

E M O T I O N S

  • sadness
  • happiness
  • fear
  • anger
  • joy
  • disgust
  • surprise
  • trust
  • envy
  • love

see what I mean?!?! It's one word with so many meanings. a lot of times, people throw it around without understanding that A) emotional doesn't mean JUST sadness B) an emotion filled convo could include MANY different options of emotions C) wow this post is full of the word emotion SORRY LOL

maybe this whole mess of words is just that -- a mess. Or maybe, it makes sense to you??

The point is, we can be empathetic no matter what. Compassion is a beautiful thing. So, if there is one thing I've learned while writing this post, it's this;

if someone texts you with and says "IM HAVING A ROUGH/EMOTIONAL DAY" don't automatically assume one thing. Listen, even if that means in between those lines.  maybe technology has changed, but people still need to be heard. also, cheesy gifs are good things XD

OKAY SIGNING OFF. I think the fact that I was in the kitchen for 5 hours making 180 snickerdoodles with Sare today has perhaps made me overthink everything?????/............... *crickets*

BTW YES THESE ARE PHOTOS FROM MY VACATION STILL HAHAHA #lazy #theyareprettytho #right

p.s. I once had a snowball fight with my friend 1,000 miles away....online. yup.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT EMOTION ???
HOW DO YOU HANDLE MISUNDERSTANDINGS THROUGH TEXTING ??

  1. YES GIRL. I feel like the word "emotional" really has a bad rep - that it's horrible to be emotional because it means you're wimpy or too sensitive or something. BUT REALLY we all are emotional - and emotions are God-given. They make life beautiful because we *feel*. AND OMW YES THE SNOWBALL FIGHT. *grins like an idiot* That was so cool. Let's have one again this winter, k? *whispers* this time i'm going to win... *laughs* XD ;) THE TOY STORY GIF. I LOVE TOY STORY. <33333 WHEN I start blogging, you're gonna have to give me your secrets to using GIFs because as of now I'm CLUELESS. XD XD

  3. Ahh yes this is an interesting topic. It can be really easy to misunderstand, even if you know the person super well. I know that me and my cousin sometimes get confused when we're talking online together and we go "Wait what do you mean" "Nooo that was meant to be sarcastic." I have a gazillion online friends and sometimes it can be harddd. But it's also pretty cool because otherwise I wouldn't be able to talk to any of these people, like, /ever/. Whenever someone misunderstands me, I always go suuuuper sorry and probably make it very awkward with all my apologising. XD I DON'T WANT TO HURT ANYONE'S FEELINGS.

But that comment about Jon in Fiji and Thursdays, oh maaan. XP I laughed. XD

  4. I'm still posting photos from last year, don't worry! It looks like a lovely spot. :)

Oh, see I know those things do show emotion in writing (all caps, exclamation points, etc), but I'm such a prig I never use all caps, or more than two exclamation marks, or gifs, or the mental-pictures-in-asterisks-thing and I think I still convey emotion? I hope so at least. I feel like there are so many expressive and beautiful words in the English language, and we limit ourselves. That's my personality coming through I guess. I'm not saying those things shouldn't be done, because I'm sure they fit some people's personalities well.

P.s Do tell how you had a virtual snowball fight! I'm intrigued. :)

    1. *grins* really?! well, they're wonderful!!

Oh wow, I am here to scream that YES YOU SHOW EMOTION!!!!! wow like wow wow wow, you do. Hmm, that's true. We do limit ourselves, in a way. But, also for me, I enjoy being expressive and almost over the top when I write a blogpost? I guess its my style XD And, you're totally right! I would also never, ever ever, want you to change how you blog. It's beautiful.

P.s. well it's kinda hard to explain but man, I can throw snowballs far XD

  5. Ugh, when you misunderstand someone or they misunderstand you...it's so stressful. I don't have any contacts/text that are girls that want to hurt my feelings, all my friends are wonderful. So when I say something or they say something, I don't automatically think they probably just expressed it wrong -- I take it to heart and get offended and don't bring it up, so they can't fix it. That is the WRONG way to go about it.
Emotions, in themselves, are complex things that each person has. Characters and personalities are so vast and thoughts are so numerous that you can't really expect to know what someone is feeling or what they're supposed to feel or what they meant to feel. You can never fully comprehend God, and we are made in His image, so why want to comprehend a human? Emotions can be something that gives you hope and happiness and perspective, or narrow-mindedness, arrogance and frustration. Without each emotion, we wouldn't be able to grow closer to God. That's sort of how I like to think of it.
Brilliant post, I seriously enjoyed this, like always. <3 <3 <3

  10. SAME TO ALL CAPS THOUGH. Literally me all the time- grammatically exclamation points are used to express excitement but for me all caps it excitement, ALWAYS. This is a super interesting conversation though. I think a big part of it is not reading things into what the other person is typing (or not typing- YOUR POINT ABOUT SILENCE IS SO TRUE).

Also omw me and Fiji and unconventional calendar weeks. Brb laughing xD

    1. LOL ALL THE CAPS IS PERFECTION. exclamation marks have become super cheesy to me unless I'm using 51304850249548893486023425. don't ask. ALSO YES reading into something is SO DANGEROUS *thinks we had a conversation about this once before*

      *is still cracking up*

  12. Oh, man, I know where you are coming from... I just hate how people can be misunderstood through texting, ect.
But thankfully I haven't had any too bad experiences with it. lol. I try to send plenty of smiley faces to let the person know I'm not bored. But it can be so unnerving when you are texting someone and they simply answer, "oh ic."
That's just the worst. *starts flailing arms and crying, 'What did I say wrong? She hates me!'*

  14. This made me smile. Your writing. GAH. At first I was annoyed, and then it was just enjoyable because I *SUCK* at grammar, and who talks all English and prim in real-life?!? (Also. I'm glad I'm not the only one who abuses exclamation points!)
    BUT
While I feel like I can adequately show emotion in text/IMs (#EmojiOverload), my husband has yet to start capitalizing his letters...for starters. You will not believe how many arguments we've had over text when the other person wasn't even mad in the first place. If only we lived in a perfect world. *dramatic sigh*

    1. aww really?! wow! I cracked up when I read your comment about my grammar. I apologize XD I actually can't help myself anymore..but I promise you, when I write novels, they are full of correct grammar!! (goodness gracious, I don't know how it started actually)
Seriously!? That's hysterical! I think guys do have a harder time with texting..perhaps since we get to legit read their minds instead of what they are saying??... idk! But wow, thank you for commenting Bethany! I checked out your blog and uhm, your photography is stunning. also, how did you find my blog?! I'd love to know! <3

  15. I think we can definitely show sarcastic emotion online, and funny and excited emotions, but it takes different types of words to show depth or sorrow or passion. So yes, while I agree we can show some emotion online, we def can't show all emotions, or at least not with *stars* and caps and exclamation marks, emotions go way beyond that. ;) Jessica (Apples of Gold) put it super perfectly. <3
