HOW THE LITTLE THINGS REALLY AREN'T LITTLE AT ALL

January 24, 2018

I posted one of my essayish poems on my poetry blog last week. basically in it, I was talking about how we have become an entitled people...

en·ti·tled
inˈtīdld,enˈtīdld/
adjective
  1. believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

bc I know how it works for myself. I forget that that second that I just lived was a gift. I forget that waking up again was a miracle and that WOW YES THE SUN DID RISE TODAY.

one of you lovely humans commented on my poem and made me see something I hadn't seen before. Skylar Reese said "what a great reminder for HOW MUCH we are blessed" to which I replied "ikr! also how we think the little things are little when they are BIIGGGG"

and lol I didn't even pre-think this. I just typed it. and then I was like

WAIT

the earth is huge. the sky is. the oceans and seas are. trees + wind = strength. water has power none of us even know. it's just that I hear people say "let's stop and notice the little things". for some reason I have always thought of flowers and ants and lying down to watch the clouds disappear in the sky. idk. is that just me?

Days are gifts. I'm starting to realize that more and more. I just wanna spend them truly full.
so I ......................

  • bake. bake. bake. IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY FOLKS
  • laugh all day every day
  • read allllllllllllll the books + find books for my little siblings to read. GUYS THEY ARE ALL READING NOW AND ITS LIKE MAKING THE LIBRARIAN IN ME SO HAPPY
  • listen to loud music and sing at the top of my lungs bc 20 minute drive to and from work every day means lots of music
  • goof off with my family. plan adventures with friends. eat healthy. try new things. write.

But these things can't be the little things bc WOWWWW they seem awful big and important to me. As I've grown and changed these past few months, I'm starting to notice how quickly my daily life could change.

btw the recipe for that bread in the picture is HERE. you will not be sorry you made it.

also smile. even if it isn't for you. even if you feel like you can't, I promise, smiles change the world.

I'd love to know what things aren't little to you.........
what makes you smile????????

  1. Oh, I love this post so much! It's so important to treasure every moment, especially since I take a lot of things for granted. This year, one of my resolutions is to start treasuring every moment, since I'll be leaving for college soon. I want to start appreciating the little things I do with my family, like making my brother oatmeal every day or singing with my mom in the car.
Things that make me smile....I love waking up early, drinking coffee and reading my Bible as the sun rises...I like reading books til midnight...I like going to the library and coming out with a stack of books...
and whoa, this comment is long. :)) Anyway, apologies for the rambling comment and great post!

  2. "smiles change the world" -- adding that to my quite journal... along with this entire post <3<3 ily girl, your posts always inspire me!!

    - blaring musicals in the kitchen and yelling along (with my sisters and mom)
    - laughing randomly, even if people call you crazy-- be the weirdo who dares to enjoy (Elizabeth Gilbert).
    - highlighting an awesome passage from Scripture
    - reading near a nice smelling candle

  3. JULIA THIS POST IS PURE GOLD. From the second I read the title I knew I was going to love it. The "little" things really aren't little. We are alive today and that is definitely a big deal! A few things that make me insainly happy are writing, reading poetry aloud to myself, laughing with my sisters, getting dressed up and making myself really feel the beauty of every breath I take. <3

  9. its so true! The littler things that make us smile are really so important to us.
Some things that make me smile are:
    -Watching my horse's ears
-Hearing my siblings sing TobyMac songs that they've learned just from hearing me sing them so much
-Listening to my favorite songs with faster tempo (it sounds like The Chipmunk's covered them XD)
-Samwise Gamgee quotes (he's a character from Lord of the Rings)
    -Singing all day everyday
    -My favorite foods
    -Watching my horse roll
-Frodo Baggins' eyes (he's a character from LotR too)

    And so much more. ;)

I have thought about this a lot lately, I think especially with getting older, like you said I’m realizing how IMPORTANT the little things are. And when I think about it, honestly they are the things that I enjoy the most! God is SO GOOD to give us little things to enjoy and feel.
Thank you so much, so inspiring!!!!

  12. This is so true - there's almost no such thing as little things. And I also really appreciated your essayish poem, even if I didn't get to comment.

It's interesting because for the last few weeks I've been staying in a barren city suburb, and I'm realizing how much about the scenery at home I take for granted: seeing sunrises, sunsets, and stars; having space to walk around and be alone with God; quietness with no traffic or sirens; grass, and trees, and plants; friendly country people and the way they drive... so many things. Anyway, thanks for this post, and I will take your advice and try smiling today. :) xx

wow. girl. I know what you mean by that! I am learning how much I am blessed to live in the country. I really really cherish it. Also how content I am with my small towns. I like it - and am glad for that. HOPE YOU GO BACK TO THE COUNTRY SOON. <3 awww. *hugs* smile always dude xxxx

  15. okay, this is the GREATEST. Little things are what big things are made of. So true, and I think we forget that a lot. For me, whenever I learn a bit of how big and amazing and intricate the world is, I start to feel small, but it's a good kind of small, ya know?

    my short list of things:

    - music that makes my heart jump
    - driving with the windows open
    - early morning light + hot coffee

    best.

      keep smiling xx

  16. "But these things can't be the little things bc WOWWWW they seem awful big and important to me."

Yes. So much yes. And that's why I'm trying to make time for the little things again, because it means so much in the grand scheme of things!!!!

    Also, though:
-new ideas that make you excited
-The amazingness of the future and all the hope it instills in you and the little shiver it sends down my spine occasionally
-RAIN. I love it and hate it at the same time. But I mostly love it.
-Wearing long pants (that happen to be super unflattering and comfortable) for the first time in... 6 months?
-Being able to talk to Jesus any time any where about any thing. I couldn't live without that. <3
